About the Artist

Allen Douglas combines his affinity for nature with more than three decades of professional experience creating fantasy illustration for the publishing, editorial, and gaming industries. His commercial work has included projects for notable clients such as Wizards of the Coast, Penguin Putnam, St. Martin’s Press, Random House, Scholastic, HarperCollins, Little Brown, Disney-Hyperion, Hasbro, Upper Deck, and the United States Mint. The demands of visual storytelling have given him an enduring appreciation for narrative, world-building, and the ability of an image to suggest a larger story beyond its edges. His independent work allows those instincts to wander into less defined territory. In his ongoing CRYPTID VISIONS series, familiar animals become subjects of speculation and transformation, occupying a space somewhere between the natural world and the imagined. These paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States and abroad, including Rehs Contemporary Gallery, Haven Gallery, Abend Gallery, Gallery Nucleus, the Mazza Museum of International Art from Picture Books, the Society of Illustrators in New York and Los Angeles, and the Strong National Museum of Play. His artwork has received recognition from numerous prominent juried competitions including Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, the Society of Illustrators of both New York and Los Angeles, Art Renewal Center, Infected By Art, 3×3, and Creative Quarterly. He earned his BFA from Syracuse University and his MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he has taught since 2003. He works from his studio in Rochester, NY, on the southern shores of Lake Ontario, where the local flora and fauna provide plenty of reminders that the natural world is already strange enough. Sometimes it only takes a slight shift in perspective to make it stranger.

“Lifting the Veil”: This painting is an example of my independent body of work that I have titled “Cryptid Visions.” CRYPTID is a term used to describe creatures whose existence has been suggested but not scientifically documented. It is a fitting lens through which to view the independent body of work by Allen Douglas, whose paintings depict animals in both familiar and unexpected ways. This space between fact and invention is central to his painting practice. Drawing frequently from folklore, he distorts scale relationships, environments, or the animals themselves to create images that feel both otherworldly and grounded, honoring the inherent physical traits and behaviors of his subjects even as he reinterprets them. The result is work that asks the viewer to reconsider the boundary between the observed world and the imagined one.
